Why We Put Robots in the Garden

Gardening and robotics may seem like two completely different subjects.

We don’t see them that way.

Bronx Special Kids’ Robots in the Garden programming brings hands-on STEM learning into an outdoor garden environment. Our event materials have included building simple robot kits as a family, outdoor STEM activities, a sensory-friendly regulation and play area, books, and refreshments.

Why combine STEM and gardening?

Because learning does not need to stay inside traditional subject boxes.

A garden can become a science classroom. A robot can become an invitation to problem-solve.

Building something can create opportunities for communication, sequencing, fine-motor practice, teamwork, experimentation, and persistence.

And an outdoor environment gives children opportunities to move, regulate, take breaks, and reconnect with an activity in different ways.

For us, accessibility does not mean lowering expectations. It means thinking differently about where learning happens and how children can participate in it.

Sometimes that means planting a seed. Sometimes it means building a robot next to the garden bed. Sometimes it means both.
